A community requires a timeless inspirational source that unites all. We call this ‘the soul of the company’. It consists of those intangible things that nevertheless matter most and define the essence of the organisation. Why does the company exist? How does the organisation work towards the welfare of all people? What principles and values define the way we relate and work together? Exploring and articulating such questions inspires people, gives meaning to people’s work, and lends clarity and direction to the company’s vision, strategies, tactics, and operations.
Through community building, existing challenges in companies, such as inefficiency, lack of ownership, people working in silos, or facing tensions with diversity are being addressed in an effective and sustainable way. Community building as a foundation can elevate existing approaches like agile, holacracy and scaling-up methods to work even better, both in small and larger settings. It releases the agency in people to become the driving force of organisational development, becoming a true learning organisation.
You can never change reality by fighting the exiting systems. Make new models that make the old one obsolete.
This question opens the way to think about your company in a different way. In a community, individuals are working together in an environment of trust. They are united through shared values and are driven by a higher purpose that is serving the needs of society.
In a community, people naturally cooperate and learn together, thus multiplying their strengths and creativity. In a community, people relate to each other in a different way – one that promotes trust, collaboration and mutual support.
It may sound overwhelming, or even impossible. It takes time to achieve great things. It is a process of many small and parallel steps taken by sincere individuals who dare to break the status quo, are focused on positive change, are taking action, and are learning from experience.
The process starts with just one person taking one small step. Gradually, a few others are interested in finding new ways of working together. Through conversations and small actions, a core group is gradually formed that is creating a new way of thinking. Over time, other small groups emerge in the organisation and, together, they become part of a movement of positive change.
A community starts to emerge when processes and structures in the company start to actively reinforce trust, collaboration, mutual support and unity at all levels. As more and more companies transform into communities, they together make more effective and meaningful change in society.
Communities can not be built by people from the “outside’. Individuals within the organisation themselves are in charge of their own personal and collective development. Transforming into a community is thus, in essence, a capacity building process. The more capable we become to foster community life, the faster our transformation process will be.
A process of community building can start in many different ways and usually consists of a combination of training, workshops, and accompaniment. We distinguish five different areas depending on the needs of the organisation. In reality, all five are being addressed, while the initial focus and emphasis may differ.
